Selam. Tadiyas. Hi! My name is Ahmad Melaku. I am Ethiopian. My country is believed to be the birthplace of the human race. I am going to take you on a journey through the rugged desert, the highlands, and mountains, and the springs and valleys that make up my country. I can’t wait to show you the secrets of Ethiopia.

Fun Facts

Ethiopia is in the “Horn of Africa.” It’s called the Horn, because it looks like a rhinoceros’s horn sticking out of the African continent.
Africa is the second-largest continent on Earth, with 54 countries. 48 countries are on the mainland, and there are 6 island nations.
Ethiopia is the tenth largest country in Africa.
Ethiopia is the only African country that was never colonized.
Colonization means that a group of people has established control over the indigenous people of an area. Indigenous people are those who are native to that land.
The most common Ethiopian currency is the Birr, pronounced beer. One birr (ETB) is equal to $0.02 cents in American dollars. $5 equals about ETB 210.

Famous Landmarks

Holy Trinity Cathedral
This massive and ornate cathedral is the second-most important place of worship in Ethiopia. It’s also the celebrated final resting place of Emperor Haile Selassie and his wife Empress Menen Asfaw.

Blue Nile/Tisisat Falls
The Tisisat Falls are an awe inspiring and spectacular sight that you can hear long before you actually see them. It plunges more than 50 m / 164 feet into the gorge below and easy to access from Bahir Dar.

Sof Omar Cave
The Sof Omar Cave extends to over 15 km / 9.5 miles in length, making it the longest of Ethiopia's caves. It has over 42 entrances and home to cave-dwelling creatures as bats and crustaceans. (Photo: Ian Plant Photo)
